Aid groups tackle new Middle East crisis as a million plus people are now homeless in Lebanon

The Israeli occupation of Lebanon has sparked a new wave of displacement in a region already under record pressure.

As Israel expands its military campaign in Lebanon, aid groups and humanitarian organizations are rushing to help up to 1.2 million people - nearly a quarter of the country's population - who have been forced out of their houses from the conflict.

Israel invaded southern Lebanon on September 30 in an attempt to drive Hezbollah forces from the two countries' shared border and allow the return to northern Israel of tens of thousands of Israelis who have also been displaced by the fighting over the past year.

People and NGOs are now concerned that millions are homeless and without food as a result of the war and the resources available can't go round.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urged the government to lower petrol prices, requesting that they fall below the levels seen in June 2023.

TUC President Festus Osifo made this request during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday. He stated, “We demand that prices be reduced, not just to previous levels, but even lower.”

Osifo called for government action in the sector by providing foreign exchange to the Dangote Refinery at a rate of $1 to ₦1,000, rather than the current rate of over ₦1,600, to help decrease petrol prices.

He emphasized that the proposed solution, if enacted, would bring prices back to what they were in June of last year. He pointed out that “no government in the world allows its critical sectors to be dictated by market forces,” and that the Nigerian government should not permit the oil sector to be solely affected by the naira's fluctuations.

Osifo highlighted the need for petrol to be affordable, available, and accessible to all Nigerians, stressing that it is essential for households nationwide, regardless of vehicle ownership.

He called on the Federal Government to issue licenses to all marketers to source petrol from the Dangote Refinery through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Additionally, Osifo suggested that the NNPCL should import refined petrol from other suppliers if the Dangote Refinery is unable to meet Nigeria’s daily consumption requirements.
